I am living in Ottawa - Canada Day central. I am on my way out to the celebrations so I may report on that later. I can say that just having come back from a trip to Europe, I am even more proud to be Canadian. I loved Germany, and saw so many things that Canada could do better, but I was also taken aback by the great welcome I got from people who heard I was Canadian. We must be doing something right, by the world standards. I'm so happy to be Canadian!!
So, to say the last month or so has been hard for training would be an understatement. I have been totally OFF training for over a month. First I had an overwhelming allergic reaction. It was hives all over, and that left me drained, sick and tired. After a lot of trial and error and figuring out, I have discovered that I am allergic to artificial sweeteners. Man, easy to cut out of my diet and I have... I'm so glad to have my skin back!
I was in Europe for 2 weeks, primarily in Germany. On the flight over, I caught a cold. I spent most of the first week suffering while I was at the conference. Then I felt a bit better but for the second week, the crappy feeling held on. With all the travelling, sleeping poorly, partying too hard, I never got better. On the way back, I started to feel horrible again, and a bad cough had developed. I was only home for a couple of days and then off to San Francisco for work. The cough held on (actually got worse, not helped by all the smoke from wild fires in San Fran) and when I came back I went straight to the doctor. He told me I have a sinus infection and now I'm finally on antibiotics!! Onward and upward to good health.
On the training front, my first race is this Saturday!! Holy unprepared! I haven't done much directed training in 5 weeks! Luckily in this race, I'm doing a relay with 2 guys from work. I'm the runner, running 6.4 km. Shouldn't be too bad, except its mostly uphill!! I hope to get in a couple training runs this week and wing it. As long as I feel better, I can push myself through that race for sure.
But starting today, I'm back on the training train. My own focus race is the St. John's Tri on August 11, while I'm home. Luckily I have a decent base from all winter, and now all I need to do is pull the lead out of my ass and get back to it.
Wish me luck!!
Europe summary to come!!
